"Middle school is a very special time in a child's development. During this time, rapid intellectual, emotional, and physical changes occur and leave a child seeking to gain greater independence. Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School is structured to recognize the developmental needs of students at different grade levels: Fifth grade students have one teacher for all of their academic classes; sixth grade academic classes are taught by two teachers - one for math and science and one for humanities; seventh and eighth grade students are taught by a team consisting of teachers specializing in math, science, English, and social studies. Because the school is small, teachers and students know each other, and the result is a caring, supportive family atmosphere. Teachers at each grade level meet daily as a team to plan curriculum and share student progress. Reading specialists, special educators, guidance counselors, and other support staff are also available to work along with the teams to provide added student assistance. In some classrooms, the special education teacher works with the regular education teacher to provide a very strong support system to better assure student success. Individual student needs are also met through differentiated instruction...."
